Symposium: Medical Evidence

Saturday, 5 November 2016
09:00 - 11:45

Piedmont 4 (12th Floor)

Chair: Luciana Garbayo, University of Central Florida

This symposium will address problems of medical evidence relevant to philosophers of science in general, as well as problems that are unique to the philosophy of medicine and the philosophy of evidence-based medicine (EBM). The majority of philosophical scholarship on medical evidence has explored randomization, EBM hierarchies of evidence, and mechanistic evidence. We will open up or further discussion on five relatively unexplored topics: pragmatic clinical trials; meta-evidence for the assessment of therapies; epistemology and social responsibility in medical research; diagnostic evidence; and the use of evidence in clinical reasoning. These five topics span the full spectrum of evidence generation, evidence evaluation and evidence use
