The New Quantification of Normals

Ashley Shew will talk about access to fitness programs and the quantification of health in the context of disability. Drawing from the field of disability studies, which understands disability as a political and social category, rather than a set of potential medical conditions, Shew illustrates of configurations of health and wellness reinforce social pressures that express biases against disability. Adding this quantification of health to a cultural context already full of “up-standing norms” (everyday values and architecture that emphasize the importance of standing and walking), Shew discusses the biases encountered in the scientific and technological configuration around wellness.
