A Tale of Seven Scientists and a New Philosophy of Science

The paper will examine some case studies of little known scientists at the border of chemistry and physics working in the early 20th century. They include John Nicholson, Anton van den Broek and Edmund Stoner. For example, Nicholson was able to accommodate many lines in the spectrum of the Orion Nebula and the Solar Corona. He also correctly predicted a number of previously unknown lines in these astronomical objects on the basis of a theory that turned out to be incorrect in almost every respect.
