Inaccessibility and the Growth of Knowledge about the Earth's Deep Interior

Seismology is responsible for the rapid growth of knowledge about the earth’s deep interior over the past century. But what is it about seismology that made this possible? I will argue that in order to understand the growth of evidence in seismology, you need to understand how it is that seismologists were able to develop a kind of ability—the ability to create certain evidential structures that can be used to extract evidence about the earth’s interior. I will then briefly consider how we might go about investigating in more detail the development of this ability.
